What to Expect

At The Floatation Centre, we make all reasonable efforts to ensure a comfortable, clean and safe environment for you.
The floatation experience for newbies and oldbies alike looks like this:
1. We’ll chat together and answer any of your questions

If there is something we haven’t covered here or in our FAQ below, be sure to ask now!

2. Enter your private float room and rinse off in the shower

Arrive a little bit early to make sure you use the washroom prior to floating. No one wants to leave the tank mid-float to pee!

3. Step into the float tank and close the door behind you

Floating happens in the nude and doesn’t require a bathing suit. If you wear contact lenses, bring your case & solution with you as you’ll want to take your contacts out before your float.

4. Float!

You are in complete control of your experience. Not sure how to let go? Here are a few pointers:

  • Start with consciously taking deep breaths – in through your nose, out through your mouth. Observe your breath but let it happen naturally.
  • Get cozy and explore what float position works best for you: palms down, with your arms at your side OR palms up, with your arms up over your head.
  • Let stuff go. Thoughts will come and go – acknowledge them and just let ‘em slide away. Hit the reset button and practice this each time a new thought enters your brain. And it’ll happen!
  • Remember: approximately 90% of our brain is busy dealing with external stimuli. Take away those distractions and recognize the full potential of your mind.
5. As your session ends, quiet music will fade in and gently ease you out of your float

Floating is a peaceful and tranquil experience, so as your time ends we will ease you back into the world with no sudden jolts or loud alarms.

6. Step out of the tank, shower, and get dressed

We have towels and products for you to use after you float. If you have special products such as deodorant, facial wash or facial moisturizer, be sure to bring those with you.

7. Feel blissed out, basking in your post-float glow

Have a quick shower, get dressed and exit your personal float room. Sit in our lounge and enjoy some tea, taking a moment to write your thoughts, feelings, and/or observations in our journal, and just enjoy feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Preparation

Bring yourself – we have towels and products for you to use after you float. You float in the nude and therefore don’t require a bathing suit either! If you wear contact lenses, bring your case & solution with you as you’ll want to take your contacts out before your float. If you have special products such as deodorant, facial wash or facial moisturizer, bring those along as well.

Avoid shaving and/or waxing within 12 hours of your float session. The high content of salt in the water can be irritating to freshly shaved or waxed skin.

Please allow for at least 4 washes if you have recently dyed your hair. If you have long hair please wear it up while floating.

If you have a small cut, you will be provided with personal-sized petroleum jelly packets to cover your small cut and reduce irritation.

Have a light, easily-digestible meal about 2 hours before your float. Rumbly tummies, from over or under consumption, can be annoying and/or uncomfortable while floating.

People who experience motion sickness are certainly welcome to float however, in our experience, we have found that taking half a Gravol 30 minutes prior to floating has reduced the effects of motion sickness significantly.

Arrive a little bit early to make sure you use the washroom prior to floating. No one wants to leave the tank mid-float to pee!

Cigarettes are stimulants and may be a little too much for you before floating. Floating has been shown to suppress cravings and aid with kicking addictive habits. Who knows? Maybe your float session could be the first step of quitting smoking!

Caffeine, like tobacco, is a stimulant and should be avoided before floating. You want to be chill and not jittery before getting into the tank.

Frequently asked questions

It is a good idea to leave yourself 10-15 minutes before your float to arrive, even if just to avoid any outside stress. While there are 3 parking spaces available and on-street parking, we don’t want you feeling rushed & stressed before your float. Also, it’s a good idea to take a safety trip to our washroom before closing yourself into a tank for an hour!

EVERYONE! Well, almost.

There is a plethora of information out there on floatation therapy — here’s one article from WebMD, and another from Healthline. Worldwide studies have tested and proven that it’s beneficial for relieving stress, depression, anxiety, and for treating fibromyalgia, PTSD, chronic pain, and a litany of other ailments.

People who experience motion sickness are certainly welcome to float however, in our experience, we have found that taking half a Gravol 30 minutes prior to floating has reduced the effects of motion sickness significantly – pretty much to zero!

Those who experience vertigo or epilepsy should contact us prior to booking to discuss their symptoms.

After each float the tanks are filtered 5 to 7 times, wiped down, and skimmed. The combination of the high concentrations of epsom salt and minuscule amounts of bromine (in Float Rooms 1 & 2) make it cleaner than a pool and impossible for microorganisms to live. At the end of each day, we run the filtration system for a minimum of 30 minutes along with a heavy-duty UV system. Our third float tank uses 30% hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizer (instead of bromine) to keep the tank water crystal clear and safe for you!

Each room can be locked from the inside, so yes! It’s a-okay to leave your stuff inside each float room as you float.

Nope! Magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) makes your skin very soft. You do absorb some of the Epsom salt, so make sure you drink plenty of water after your float. Heck, you should be staying hydrated all the time!

The sensation of floating in the tank is more like floating in a wide-open space than in a confined area. You are in total control of the float environment and can choose to float with the door open or closed, with our coloured lights on or off. Claustrophobic people after their float typically do not report experiencing problems, and some are quite surprised with how easy it is to the adjust to the cozy environment.

That’s completely safe, and it happens sometimes (it still does for Lindsay). Your buoyancy in the water supports you on your back, so flipping over is tremendously difficult to do. If you manage to twitch during the float, the worst that typically happens is salt water in your eyes – which can wake you up in a hurry.

For more information, read our blog post “What happens if I fall asleep during my float?

Absolutely! Just use the same protocol you’d use for a swimming pool, such as tampons or menstrual cups.

Oh buoy, can you ever! Pregnant folks have used floating to relieve the stress on their bodies for decades. If you’re in your third trimester, though, or have any concerns, make sure you check in with your doctor before booking a float.

Not right away. Please allow for at least 4 washes after dyeing your hair before floating.

Hair dye in the tanks will result in a hefty cleaning fine added to your account.

Dr John C. Lilly. He created the first floating tank in the 1950s, but later refined the model in the 1970s, which is a similar unit to what is most commonly used today (Oasis Relaxation and Samadhi).

There are a ton of great tank manufacturers. We spent a lot of time researching tanks, and the Oasis Relaxation tanks we use are consistent, easy to maintain, allow you to bring in your own music to play yet give you a pure, floating experience. For our third float room, we host an Escape Pod tank which is, basically, a modular version of the Oasis Relaxation. Since we added it after we had been open for a year, we needed something we could build ourselves within the float room!
